How are Ballet passphrase entropy and private key entropy are matched correctly during the manufacturing process?

Ballet’s manufacturing process involves the use of serial numbers to match the corresponding private key entropy, passphrase entropy, and cryptocurrency address. You can see the three matching serial numbers on the right side of the Ballet Cold Storage card: one on the steel card, one on the cryptocurrency address QR code sticker, and one on the yellow private key entropy sticker below. Here’s how the serial numbers are used in the manufacturing process:

  1. The first step in the two-factor key generation process is generating a BIP38 passphrase entropy and its corresponding BIP38 intermediate code. These two pieces of information are linked together by a serial number.
  2. The intermediate code and the serial number are electronically transmitted to the secure manufacturing facility where the private key entropy is generated.
  3. The private key entropy and its associated cryptocurrency address are generated from the intermediate code.
  4. The private key entropy and cryptocurrency address are printed on tamper-evident QR code stickers along with the serial number.
  5. The QR code stickers are shipped back to the first manufacturing facility.
  6. The QR code stickers are affixed to a steel cold storage card.
  7. The BIP38 passphrase entropy, which was labeled with a serial number in the first step of the process, is laser-etched onto the steel cold storage card with the corresponding QR code stickers.
  8. Our rigorous quality control process ensures that all three serial numbers on the finished product match.
